Destination: Cancun

January seems to be a pretty popular month for friends’ birthdays. I was invited to celebrate a “21st” birthday in Cancun, and as usual, Cancun did not disappoint.

The weather was perfect, the beach was beautiful, the blue ocean was crystal clear and the drinks were delicious.

When I go on vacations, I tend to drop everything and be out and about exploring, however my favorite activity when in Cancun is to sit on a beach with a good book, relaxing and recharging my batteries.

Seeing the Mayan ruins is another activity I’ve enjoyed in the Cancun area. You can organize tours through your hotel concierge or even rent a car to take a day trip to Tulum or Chichen Itza. I love history, and ancient ruins fascinate me. I always try and think through the planning and construction process given the lack of modern technology in those times.  I would advise taking drinking water and bug spray with you.

Swimming with dolphins was something that had always been on my bucket list. Although, a very popular tourist thing to do, I have recently become more aware of animals in captivity.

The water in Cancun is clear and often very calm. 4 of us decided to go on an all-day snorkeling adventure. We ventured to 3 different ocean locations. It feels as if you are in a different world as you take in the amazing sights underwater: the many varieties of brightly colored fish, the coral, seaweed and plants on the ocean floor. To top it off, the water was shallow, which allowed us to walk and feel the sand between our toes. All necessary equipment was provided. I recommend using AllTourNative if snorkeling is something you are interested in doing.  Piece of advice: don’t forget your GoPro if you have one!

Did I mention the drinks are delicious?

If traveling with groups of friends or family, I normally try to stay at an all-inclusive resort. However, on this last trip, we stayed at the beautiful Westin Laguna Mar Hotel. Do a little research when it comes to finding the best accommodation for you!

When I stay at all-inclusive resorts, I tend to eat all of my meals at the resort restaurants. This time round, since we stayed at the Westin, we decided to venture out a little for some of our meals. We went to a seafood restaurant called Lorenzillo’s, an authentic Mexican restaurant called La Paella and a Thai place called Thai. I would recommendt all 3 for the delicious food, WONDERFUL service and great atmosphere.

If you are looking for a fun in the sun kind of vacation, Cancun could be your destination. I’m looking so forward to exploring other places in Mexico.

What is your favorite warm destination?

XOXO Mandi
